Summer Leadership: The Real Test of Your Dental Practice

Summer has a habit of testing a practice in ways we don’t always notice.

Some of the team are on holiday. Others are covering extra responsibilities. People are thinking about family, weekends away, football, Wimbledon, or simply making the most of the longer evenings.

That’s life, and we shouldn’t expect people to leave it all at the door.

The interesting question isn’t whether people become distracted, of course they do, the real question is whether your patients still receive the same care, attention and reassurance while all of this is going on.

Patients don’t know who is on annual leave or that someone is covering two roles. They don’t know your receptionist has been working flat out all week or that a nurse has swapped shifts to help a colleague. They only know what it felt like to be looked after.

That’s why I think summer is one of the best tests of leadership. Good leadership isn’t about asking people to work harder because others are away, or about squeezing more out of an already busy team. It’s about creating a culture so strong that the standard remains, even when circumstances change.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people understand what the practice stands for, they communicate well, and they care enough to protect the standards, regardless of who is in the building.

As leaders, we often spend time measuring productivity, cancellations, diary utilisation and revenue, and those things matter. However, perhaps the most important question this summer is much simpler:

“If one of our patients visited us today, would they still feel they had been looked after in the way we would want?”

If the answer is yes, then your culture is stronger than your circumstances, and that’s what leadership really looks like.
